COVID-19 deaths reach 7,000 in Japan

The death toll from COVID-19 in Japan reached 7,000 people on Monday, including fatalities from the Diamond Princess cruise ship last year.

Tokyo reported on Monday 266 newly confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus. It was the first time in seven days, or since Feb. 8, that the number fell below 300.

There were 97 patients showing serious symptoms in the capital on Monday, down by six from the previous day.

The average daily number of newly infected people in the last seven days was 378.6. This was 68.2% of the figure in the previous seven days, during which the daily average of newly infected people was 555.3.
