Covid-19 deaths plummet by 28% in just one week as grim UK total nears 150,000

Coronavirus deaths have dropped by 28% in a week as the UK's overall number of fatalities nears 150,000, new figures show.

Some 2,105 people passed away after catching coronavirus in England and Wales in the week up to March 5, down by 809 on the week before.

The UK's total number of Covid deaths has now hit 147,681, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The number of care home resident deaths in England and Wales that involved coronavirus also fell by more than three quarters in a month.

There were 2,175 care home resident fatalities where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate in the week ending February 5.

This compares with 467 deaths for the week ending March 5 - down 78.5% in four weeks.

The statistics cover deaths of care home residents in all settings, not just in care homes.

A total of 41,458 care home residents in England and Wales have now had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile, all regions of England recorded a week-on-week fall in the number of Covid-19 deaths registered, according to the latest figures.

South-east England was hardest-hit by the virus with 328 coronavirus fatalities, down 32% from 481 in the previous week.

East England saw the second highest number with 277 deaths, which was 18% lower than the 337 fatalities the week before.

However, thanks to the UK's successful vaccination programme many of Britain's most vulnerable residents now have protection against Covid.

Around three-quarters of people aged 80 and over in private households in England were likely to have Covid antibodies in the 28 days to March 3, the ONS said.
