The death toll from the COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, has reached 517 in Japan as of Saturday.
This figure excludes those on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was in the Port of Yokohama in February.
There were 31 people confirmed dead from the disease across 11 prefectures on Saturday, the highest one-day death toll recorded.
Of the confirmed deaths, 15 were in Tokyo, three each in Hokkaido and Osaka Prefecture, and two each in Kanagawa and Ishikawa prefectures.
Since mid-April, the number of fatalities has exceeded 100 per week and has been on the rise. The death toll exceeded 400 only four days earlier on April 28.
