Covid-19 death toll in North East climbs by 26, NHS England confirms

NHS England has recorded 26 more confirmed Covid-19 deaths in the North East.

A further 445 deaths were recorded across the country, a drop of 101 compared to yesterday.

The overall death toll of the coronavirus has been confirmed to be higher than previously reported due to a change in the way care home deaths are recorded.

According to Public Health England, there have 26,097 death in hospitals and care homes.

The new North East figures cover the period up to 5pm on April 28 but some of the recorded deaths actually occurred days or weeks ago and were only registered yesterday.

Hospitals in South Tyneside and Sunderland saw the highest death toll of North East trusts with eight new deaths recorded.

Below is a breakdown of how many deaths occured in each trust:

County Durham and Darlington - 2

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear - 0

Gateshead - 2

Northumbria - 3

South Tyneside and Sunderland - 8

Newcastle - 4

North Tees and Hartlepool - 1

South Tees - 6

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys - 0
