Covid-19: CrossCountry rail chaos continues as West Country trains hit by staff shortages

A train operator which runs services through Bristol has warned of cancellations this month due to staff shortages.

CrossCountry says it has seen an increase in staff absence due to Omicron, which it says is resulting in short-notice cancellations across the network.

Passengers are being urged to check their journeys online before they travel as ticket restrictions are eased.

A CrossCountry spokesperson told BristolLive : “We have seen an increase in staff absence due to Omicron, which is resulting in some short-notice cancellations across the network.

“We are working hard alongside industry partners to provide the most reliable service possible.

“We have eased ticket restrictions in some instances to provide greater flexibility and advise passengers to check their journeys online before travelling.”

CrossCountry runs services through the South West including Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway.

It comes after several key routes in the West Country experienced major delays over Christmas and New Year due to a “shortage of train crew.”

Passengers were warned not to travel on New Years’ Eve as no trains were running from Bristol Temple Meads through to Gloucestershire.

John Robson of CrossCountry told the BBC its absenteeism rates were worsening each day as a result of Covid cases.

He said the operator would aim to protect core services.

He told the publication: "The absenteeism rates we are seeing at the moment are worsening each day and that is why we are going to look at what services we might decide to take out of operation strategically in order to protect those core services."
