Covid-19 cases in West Dunbartonshire plummet below the Scottish average

The number of people testing positive for Covid-19 in West Dunbartonshire has plummeted below the national average, with the virus now classed as ‘suppressed’ in six local neighbourhoods.

The latest Public Health Scotland data, which runs until March 6, paints the most positive outlook in months locally - with West Dunbartonshire dropping from Scotland’s third worst hit council area to 17th.

According to the figures, 40 people locally tested positive for Covid-19 over the past week, giving the area a rate of 45 cases per 100,000 - below the Scottish average of 62.7 per 100,000, and a dramatic drop from the 138.3 per 100,000 recorded as the Lennox went to print last Monday.

Covid cases are now classed as ‘suppressed’ in Dumbarton, Dumbarton East, Kilpatrick, Bowling, Alexandria and Lomond, meaning that less than two people have tested positive within the last seven days.

Bonhill recorded a drop from 168.9 cases per 100,000 to 67.5, whilst in Leven the figure remains at 80 per 100,000 - with both areas remaining above the suppressed threshold.

Balloch bucked the trend however, reporting a rise in cases, with the rate in the village now sitting at 135.9 cases per 100,000 - an increase from the 101.9 per 100,000 reported last week, making it the worst hit area in the whole of West Dunbartonshire.

Test positivity has, however, decreased dramatically locally, with just 2.4 percent of tests coming back with a positive result, compared to 5.6 percent in the previous seven days.
