Health authorities have confirmed "at least six" cases of COVID-19 on the Limestone Coast.
The executive director of medical services with the Limestone Coast Local Health Network Elaine Pretorius said there were "definitely now cases around and about".
"We have not stood untouched."
Dr Pretorius said she was concerned about community transmission.
"At the moment, most of these cases have been close contacts and they've been routine swabbing," she said.
"But there is at least one case that I'm aware of where we haven't been able to identify the transmission event yet.
Christmas warning
Dr Pretorius said it was important to remain vigilant around family and friends at Christmas.
"Although Christmas is very important to us, the virus doesn't differentiate that it's Christmas," she said.
Dr Pretorius recommended that people host their Christmas and New Year functions outside, if possible.
"If you can't do it outside, and it's a lot of close contact, then I would recommend that you keep your mask on as long as you possibly can."
She said if people were feeling unwell they should avoid socialising and get tested for COVID-19 instead.
"The physical distancing and hand hygiene remains important," she said.
"If there's lots of family from interstate, then the physical distancing and the mask remain incredibly important."
Meanwhile, Dr Pretorius did not have any updates about the detection of COVID-19 in the wastewater at Bordertown.
