Covid-19 cases climb to double figures in eight Manchester neighbourhoods as city nears red alert level

The number of Covid-19 cases in Manchester has risen to double figures in eight neighbourhoods across the city as the local infection rate continue to climb.

More positive tests have been reported in the eastern party of the city, as well as in the north and the city centre.

An interactive map using government statistics breaks down the number of coronavirus cases in an area through colour coding, ranging from between zero and two cases to more than 40.

In the week ending August 14 the highest number of cases reported in a single area in Manchester was 13 in Levenshulme North.

There were 12 in Crumpsall South, which borders communities in Salford that have had high numbers of cases throughout the pandemic, like Higher Broughton and Broughton Park.

Elsewhere a cluster of 10 or 11 cases were reported in east Manchester areas like Ardwick, Beswick, Eastlands and Openshaw Park, Belle Vue and West Gorton.

A further 11 cases were found in Fallowfield West and Whalley Range South, and Levenshulme South & Burnage North.

Parts of the city centre which had reported little to no cases in recent months have also noted more cases, with the 10 in Piccadilly and Ancoats the highest.

Manchester is teetering on the edge of falling into the ‘red alert’ category for infection rates, which is currently only occupied by one other Greater Manchester borough - Oldham.

This would be achieved if the number of cases rises to 50 per 100,000 people, which senior figures within the council say could happen by the end of the week.

Currently the infection rate in Manchester stands at 47.6 cases per 100,000, with 263 cases reported in the week ending August 15.

This is 57 more than the previous week, which is an increase of 28 per cent.

Tighter lockdown restrictions on household mixing which were brought in across Greater Manchester last month will be reviewed again by the government on Thursday.

Mayor Andy Burnham will be giving an update on the Covid-19 situation in the city-region later today.
