Covid-19 case rocks Republic of Ireland camp ahead of Slovakia play-off

Ireland's playoff against Slovakia will go ahead as planned on Thursday even though the camp was rocked today by a confirmed Covid-19 case.

A member of the non-playing support staff to the senior team tested positive and will not be travelling to Bratislava with the squad this afternoon.

Two more FAI staff members have had to restrict their movements as a result and will not be flying to Slovakia either.

The positive test came to light on Sunday evening after routine Covid testing of all the Ireland players, management team and FAI staff ahead of the game.

The FAI said in a statement today: “COVID-19 protocols have now been executed.

“Contact tracing has resulted in two additional staff members restricting their movements.

“All three backroom staff members are asymptomatic and are well.

“The two close contacts have tested negative. All players, management team and other backroom staff members have also tested negative.”

And the statement concluded: “Public Health has been informed and have written to the FAI confirming compliance with public health advice and permission for the squad, coaching staff and the rest of the backroom team to travel to Slovakia this afternoon.”
