Covid-19 booster Ireland: Who is eligible for a booster right now?

The Covid-19 booster program has been updated in the last 24 hours after the National Immunisation Advisory Committee gave the go-ahead to speed up the rollout.

With the emergence of the Omicron variant, Government has been keen to expand the program which has so far seen over 1.2 million people receive a third dose of vaccine.

Protection against infection with just two doses of Pfizer has been dramatically reduced due to the Omicron variant.

This is why the booster campaign has been changed dramatically in the last 24 hours.

Here's everything you need to know about the updated Covid-19 booster rollout.

How long to wait before getting a booster shot?

Thanks to the updated guidance from NIAC, adults just have to wait three months (at least 90 days) after their second vaccine dose to be eligible for a booster.

How to get your booster?

There are three ways for those who are eligible to get a booster. People can either wait for an appointment at a vaccination centre, go to a walk-in centre when they are open and catering to their age cohort or book an appointment with a participating pharmacy.

Who's eligible for a booster right now?

Currently, those receiving a booster dose are in the following age cohorts.

People aged 50 and over, those living in long term care facilities or nursing homes, healthcare workers and people aged 16-49 with an underlying condition.

Who gets a booster next?

Covid-19 booster vaccines will soon be offered to those 16 years and older who are pregnant and everyone aged 16-49 with older cohorts called first.

When will 16-49-year-olds get boosters?

Booster slots for over 40s won't open until some time next week.

What vaccine will you be offered?

If you are 30 years or older you will be offered one dose of either Moderna or Pfizer. If 29 or under, you will be offered only a Pfizer dose.
