Ayrshire's coronavirus death rate is the second-highest in Scotland, figures released today show.

The region's total death rate per 100,000 population (163.8) is second only to Lanarkshire (165.3) and higher than Greater Glasgow and Clyde (158.0), data from Public Health Scotland has revealed.

In the past 24 hours, NHS Ayrshire & Arran has recorded four more coronavirus deaths. The region's total for the pandemic now stands at 605.

The news emerged as the health board reported 64 fresh cases with the area's total now at 14,060.

But Ayrshire hospital numbers are at the lowest level since January 6 with 194 patients in the NHS Ayrshire & Arran's care with the virus — down six from yesterday. ICU numbers rose again by one to 12.

Across Scotland, 58 more people have died overnight with the nation's death toll now at 6,501.

The country also recorded 822 new cases in the past 24 hours with the total now standing at 187,542.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
