Covet Cup - the reusable coffee cup making a difference in Belfast

Formed back in 2017, Covet CLR is an example of a local enterprise with a simple idea that is making a difference in Belfast.

As part of our #Do1Thing campaign, co-founder Chris McCallum spoke of the importance of thinking about the everyday choices we make.

The 28-year-old has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Queen's University and is a post doctoral researcher (bio energy) at Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

Along with Lucy Hillen, he runs Covet which produces reusable coffee cups that are sold in local spots across Belfast.

Speaking from the EastSide Visitor Centre's cafe in East Belfast, Chris told Belfast Live how a small change can make a "massive" impact.

He said: "It's really easy to start using a reusable coffee cup. You can leave it at your desk or in your car or put it in your bag and when you head to your local coffee shop, just bring it out, get your coffee filled in and that's you set.

"You've always got something that you can keep reusing and keep lowering your carbon footprint with.

"This small change has a massive, massive impact because it stops things going to landfill and that's the key part of it.

"It stops paper cups being produced which requires so much energy and water.. and for that to be used once and thrown away is irresponsible at points."

Covet CLR also looks at how businesses can become more sustainable.

Chris explained: "What we're looking at is how we can help local businesses get better. A coffee cup is only so much, but how can you get local businesses to be more sustainable?

"So that's what we're looking at: Solar panels, doing the calculations on that part, putting in other bins to get recycled waste together and how do you get people to travel more sustainably together, is it buses, is it bikes? What works best for the people in your business?"
