A police officer has been mown down after trying to pull over a car in Coventry.

Police said the male officer was rushed to hospital suffering head and leg injuries following the incident on Wednesday.

While attempting to stop the vehicle, the officer was run over and the driver fled from the scene in Holbrooks Lane, Radford.

The car involved in the incident was recovered nearby and officers are attempting to trace the driver.

The shocking incident unfolded at about 2.45pm.

West Midlands Police have reviewed CCTV from the area and traffic was redirected throughout the afternoon.

Chief Superintendent Mike O'Hara said: "It is completely unacceptable for a police officer to be injured in the line of duty.

"He has been taken to hospital for treatment and we await further updates on his injuries. We will be offering the officer and his family our full support.

"Enquiries are well under way to trace the driver and I would urge them to do the right thing and come forward."

Officers have urged anyone with information to contact West Midlands Police through their website live chat or by calling 101.
