Coventry City face transfer pain with Swansea to step up interest in Bristol City midfielder

Swansea City's agony at their 2-0 play-off final defeat to Brentford on Saturday could also be felt in Coventry as the Swans defeat means they are likely to pursue the transfer of Bristol City midfielder Liam Walsh on a free.

Walsh was unable to come to an agreement over extending his stay in the West Country and becomes a free agent at the end of next month.

Swansea were beaten 2-0 by Brentford at Wembley in Saturday's Championship play-off final keeping them in the second tier for 2020/21, which will have an impact on their transfer plans for the next two months.

As reported by Bristol Live, Walsh was a target for Steve Cooper in the summer of 2020 when he returned from an outstanding season on loan at Coventry, winning player of the year as they were promoted out of League One.

Cooper remains keen on the 24-year-old and with doubts over Matt Grimes' future at the Liberty Stadium, Walsh could either replace the Swansea captain or supplement him should he stay in south Wales.

Walsh is precisely the sort of clever, technical midfielder who Cooper loves to work with, and he would become a teammate again of Korey Smith following his release from City last summer.

Smith has prospered under Cooper's management, playing a full season for the first time since 2017/18 though he didn't finish the campaign as a starter is set to line up for the Swans for another promotion tilt in 2021/22.

Coventry would, of course, also like to resign Walsh on a permanent deal having made enquiries 12 months ago as his loan came to an end.

However, Bristol Live understands the Sky Blues are simply unable to match the salary being offered by Swansea, and potentially other Championship clubs, and a return to the Midlands looks unlikely.

City, meanwhile, remain keen on former Leicester City midfielder Matty James on a free transfer with Nigel Pearson keen to build a strong new spine at the club, assisted by the talent already in the building.

Pearson has prioritised central players for his initial transfer activity this summer with two centre-backs desired, a central midfielder and striker.

After missing out on Hull City's Reece Burke, Oxford defender Rob Atkinson and Sheffield Wednesday's Tom Lees are among those being pursued by the Robins in defence.
