Cove Rangers vs Dundee postponed due to Queen tribute and offers SPFL clue

Cove Rangers vs Dundee has been postponed as a mark of respect after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and offers a clue as to the SPFL’s plans for the rest of the weekend fixtures.

Friday night’s Championship clash will now be rescheduled. As Record Sport reported earlier, it is expected that the remainder of the weekend’s games will follow suit. British clubs playing at home in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League are expected to have their games off next midweek as well. However, those playing abroad, such as Celtic and Hearts, could still play their fixtures.

As things stand, five Premiership games are scheduled to take place on Saturday. Rangers are due at Aberdeen for a noon kick-off. Celtic are set to host Livingston at 3, with Hibs at Dundee United, Kilmarnock welcoming St Johnstone and Motherwell visiting Ross County. The remainder of the Championship fixtures and a full card in Leagues One and Two are also currently going ahead.

However, the SPFL are expected to make a call tomorrow and the expectation is that all games will be put off as a mark of respect. The monarch’s death was announced earlier this evening, with Hearts and Istanbul Basaksehir pausing for a minute’s silence before the second half of their Europa Conference League Group A opener. The Jambos are due to face St Mirren in Gorgie this Sunday.

With the Queen’s funeral set to take place in ten days time, matches on the weekend of 17 September are also set to be rescheduled. Then comes an international break, which sees Scotland travelling to Ukraine for their Nations League clash on Wednesday, 21 September before hosting Ireland at Hampden four days later.
