Courtney Love has called her 2004 solo record one of her “great shames”, along with “Steve Coogan and crack”.
The Hole frontwoman has released just one album as a solo artist, 2004’s America’s Sweetheart, and has repeatedly expressed regret over it due to her drug addiction at the time of its recording.
On her Instagram, Love shared an image of a car decal inspired by the album’s cover art, and described her present-day feelings about the record.
“Maybe one day I won’t hate that record,” Love captioned the image. “It has some good songs. But like Steve Coogan, or crack, it’s one of my life’s great shames.”
She continued: “Just the period, sloppiness, men, money, drugs, nightmare… although Château Miraval (where we made it) doesn’t suck.”
In 2010, Love said that she flew to the south of France to re-record the album following a number of false starts, but truthfully had other things on her mind.
“I just wanted to be in a château for six months and do drugs,” she joked.
Love and Coogan were briefly romantically involved in 2005, with Love revealing in 2013 that her bandmates mocked her for not knowing that Coogan is otherwise known as the fictional TV presenter Alan Partridge.
“All it was was a couple of shags at the Sunset Marquis [hotel] and I did not know he was Alan Partridge,” she told Love Magazine. “I had never seen Alan Partridge. But I was in a band with people who did know about Alan Partridge, so I had to make a record with them constantly saying to me: ‘Back of the net!’”
Last month, Love called for greater public access to Covid-19 tests, after condemning the ease with which wealthy people have been able to buy at-home tests.
