Courtney Barnett, Melbourne

Melbourne singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett collected a number of awards and accolades in 2015 – not bad for a “slacker rock songstress” who dubbed herself Pedestrian at Best. Yet as Barnett has admitted, “you wouldn’t know anything about me if I wasn’t moderately hard-working.”

And her hard work has been paid off in spades. Her debut album Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit won four of eight Aria nominations, praise from Jack White (for her ‘wry and dry’ style) and a recent Grammy nomination for best new artist.

Barnett’s laconic indie-rock observations first got people talking with the release of her debut The Double EP: A Sea of Split Pea. After setting up her own recording label, she then had a sold-out run of shows in the UK and Europe. Now after a series of festival appearances this summer, she’ll be headlining her own January tour.
