Court rejects bail for two held in Darrang eviction drive violence case

GUWAHATI: A court in Darrang on Saturday rejected the bail of two people, who had been arrested for “instigating” violence during the eviction drive at Sipajhar in Assam’s Darrang district on September 23, during which two persons had died.

The assistant sessions judge Darrang, Mangaldoi, rejected the bail plea of Mohammad Chand Mamud, a resident of Dhalpur and president of the Sanawa village panchayat, and Mohammad Asmat Ali Ahmed, a native of Kirakara village, who also served as the former president of the Bajana Pathar panchayat.

“The court observed that there are sufficient materials against the arrested duo in the case diary, following which they were denied bail,” their counsel Rabiul Hussain said.

The Assam Police on September 27 had arrested Mamud and Ahmed after acting on the FIR filed by the police, which had booked eight people, including a woman, for criminal conspiracy, rioting, and preventing public servants from carrying out their duties in connection with the eviction related violence.

The third person Sarifuddin, 40, who was arrested for allegedly provoking the local residents to violently resist the eviction drive, was rejected bail by a local court in Darrang on October 11.

The FIR filed by police blamed some people from Dhalpur and outside for “instigating” the incident, which was a “conspiracy “ and done in a “pre-planned” manner.

Police slapped 11 sections of IPC against the eight accused from the community charging them with conspiracy against government officials and rioting in this case.
