Court must decide if kitten was kicked to death or crushed during a fall

A kitten died after two women clashed over an £80 debt - with a court left to decide how it met its fate.

Lorry driver Vanessa Walvin is charged with causing unnecessary suffering by kicking it against a wall during a visit to recoup her loan.

But pet lover Nicola Tennie was accused of falling on the eight-week-old kitten and crushing it during the squabble on May 30.

She claimed that Walvin, 43, punched her and pulled her hair while she also lost a false fingernail before the kitten was hurt.

In a 999 call, Ms Tennie was recorded as saying that she had fallen on the kitten. But she told city magistrates that was not correct.

In a statement she said that Walvin "kicked the kitten as hard as she could" during a visit to her home in Salamander Close, Carlton.

Ms Tennie had been upstairs in bed ill and was wearing pyjamas when Walvin arrived at 1pm.

When questioned by Eunice Opare-Addo, prosecuting, Ms Tennie said: "The kitten was on the second top stair as she was coming up the stairs." After it was kicked, she said it had a seizure.

But Amanda Parker, defending, told her: "You fell on that kitten and crushed it."

Ms Tennie replied: "No, absolutely not, absolutely no."

She said that she asked the police what to do and told the court: "They said to go to vet to have an autopsy done." But she said that the vet refused and her mother buried it.

When told that Walvin suffered injuries to an arm and shoulder, Ms Tennie said: "What a load of lies. I can't believe what I am hearing."

Ms Tennie, who owns three horses, said that she borrowed £80 when there was a problem with her state benefits. She noticed that Walvin was angry when she arrived to collect the cash.

When asked about the debt, she said: "How can I pay her back after she has done this?"

Walvin of Victoria Street, Selston denies causing unnecessary suffering to a kitten; two charges of assault by beating, damaging a door lock at the house.

She is due to give evidence when the case resumes on October 15.
