Court finds 11 guilty in marathon KMITL ruling

Eleven people were found guilty and handed jail sentences ranging from four to 50 years in connection with an embezzlement scandal involving King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL).

Three of the defendants were acquitted including former KMITL rector Thawil Phuengma in the case in which the Min Buri provincial court spent 17 hours reading out the ruling.

The court began delivering its 572-page ruling at 8am on Tuesday and finished about 1am yesterday. The marathon ruling paused briefly for lunch and dinner breaks.

The case involved the theft of 689 million baht from the university and the laundering of 303 million baht between 2012 and 2014.

All 14 defendants denied the charges including theft, document forgery, embezzlement, malfeasance, and money laundering and they were all present to hear the ruling.

Songklod Sriprasong, 43, former manager of Siam Commercial Bank's Big C Suwintawong branch, and Amporn Noisamrit, 59, former finance director of KMITL, were sentenced to 193 years and eight months and 203 years respectively for their roles in the scandal.

Songklod was found guilty of theft, document forgery and money-laundering while Amporn was found guilty of malfeasance in office.

Songklod's jail term was reduced to 145 years and three months and Amporn's sentence was commuted to 52 years and three months because both gave useful testimonies.

However, the actual term was capped at 50 years and both were ordered to pay 80 million baht to KMITL and over 600 million baht to SCB.

The nine others were found guilty of money-laundering and sentenced to prison terms ranging from four years and six months to 24 years and nine months.

Of this group, Sappasit Limnorarat, 54, former assistant rector of KMITL, was sentenced to 24 years and nine months in prison for money laundering and ordered to repay 55.9 million baht to SCB.

Kittisak Matthujad, 30, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The court acquitted Mr Thawil, Phada Buakhao, 31, and Sombat Sopradit, 47.

Eight of those who were found guilty submitted bail requests which would be reviewed by the Appeal Court.

Mr Thawil said he was grateful for receiving justice and ready to fight the charges in case the prosecution would appeal.
