Court asked to remove Gobbo's name

Former gangland barrister Nicola Gobbo hasn't held a practising certificate since 2014. (AAP)

Snitching lawyer Nicola Gobbo hasn't worked as a lawyer in years and she could soon lose the right to ever again.

Victoria's Legal Services Board has applied to the Supreme Court to have the once-famed gangland barrister's name removed from the legal roll.

The roll is signed by all new lawyers when they are admitted to practice. They also must hold a practising certificate, which Ms Gobbo has not since 2014.

Ms Gobbo was first admitted to practice in 1997.

By then she had already been registered once as an informer. She was registered twice more after that, including her longest stint from 2005 until 2009 when she informed on clients, including some of Melbourne's underworld's biggest names.

Among them were killer Carl Williams and drug kingpin Tony Mokbel, who is among several crooks using her informing for fresh appeals against their convictions.
