Courageous climber scales Ben Nevis despite fighting multiple sclerosis for 12 years

A courageous climber has scaled Scotland’s highest mountain despite fighting multiple sclerosis for 12 years.

Three years ago Adam Enderwitz was using a wheelchair but against all odds he’s conquered Ben Nevis.

At the top, an emotional Adam, 27, from Stranraer, unfurled a message: “I’ve got MS but MS hasn’t got me.”

He said: “I was diagnosed with MS 12 years ago and eventually put on a treatment that really worked for me.

“But a few years ago I had a brain infection, which was a very rare side effect.

“I survived but was left in a wheelchair and couldn’t speak or see properly.

“So I had a lot of intense physio for a long time until I was back on my feet and living independently.”

Adam began working with personal trainer Jim Haugh after recovering from the infection diagnosed as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).

“He said: “When I developed PML, I spent about three months in hospital.

“I was mostly bed-bound but I think that was the start of a very long and tough journey to where I am now.

“Now I’m the fittest I’ve ever been.”

Adam set a goal of climbing Ben Nevis but it wasn’t all plain sailing.

His ascent was impacted by his MS, which affects balance, co-ordination and causes fatigue.

But with the support of friends and trainer Jim he achieved his ambition.

Adam said: “Ben Nevis was the toughest challenge I’ve done. I’d like to keep ticking off more Munros – that would be a big achievement.”
