THE Hunter's leaders have applauded the courage and sacrifices of the region's health care workers on the frontline of the fight against COVID-19.
The Mayors of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie joined NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian in thanking the health staff who played a crucial role in keeping the Hunter safe and well during the pandemic.
Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said these workers had been at the forefront of the fight against the virus in our local community, and we could not have done it without them.
"As the first line of response to this deadly pandemic, they worked tirelessly to provide the vital medical support needed to cope as the crisis unfolded," she said.
"While many workers transitioned into remote working arrangements to limit the risk of transmission, our amazing health care workers remained on the frontline, putting aside their own fears or concerns to continue delivering high quality treatment and care to those in need."
Cr Nelmes said health staff had taken the time to inform and educate the community about the ever-changing situation to keep the public up-to-date with the latest developments so we could work together to limit the spread of COVID-19.
"On behalf of the City of Newcastle, we offer our thanks to our amazing local nurses, midwives, doctors and other health care workers who have gone above and beyond to keep us healthy in a time of such uncertainty," she said.
"We are extremely grateful for their efforts during this unprecedented public health crisis and the essential role they continue to play in our response to COVID-19 - we couldn't have done it without them."
Kay Fraser, the Mayor of Lake Macquarie, thanked the Hunter's health workers for bravely facing the frontline on our behalf.
"I want to thank you for the sacrifices you make everyday, but especially during this pandemic," Cr Fraser said.
"Your dedication, commitment and courage deserve our deepest gratitude and admiration.
"Your service to patients is saving countless lives, and making thousands of differences.
"We congratulate you and applaud you."
The NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, added her voice to the praise.
"Our healthcare workers have played a crucial role in keeping the community safe this year," she said.
"They have been on the frontline of our battle against COVID-19, rising to the challenge and constantly adapting to the changing nature of the pandemic.
"We are deeply grateful for their hard work, skill, care and the sacrifices they have made to keep us all safe."
