Couple win fight to convert golf clubhouse into huge dream home in South Ayrshire countryside

A couple have won a fight to convert a huge former golf clubhouse into a dream family home in the South Ayrshire countryside.

Planning permission for the property transformation at the Brunston Castle golf course in Dailly was refused last year.

But councillors overturned that decision following an appeal from applicants Michael and Jane McHarg at a South Ayrshire local review body meeting recently.

It is claimed planners thought the golf course was still in operation despite it closing in January 2019 — which influenced their original decision to refuse the bid.

Designs for the two storey property submitted to the council show a gym, home entertainment area, bar, cellar, quiet room, games room and playroom included in the layout.

Explaining why councillors gave the house the go-ahead, Local Review Body chair councillor Brian Connolly said: “We thought it was a perfectly sensible request to allow it to be transformed into a house. We couldn’t see the justification in enforcing it as a golf clubhouse where there is no golf course.”

There were no objections to the plan.

A review request statement lodged with the council on behalf of the applicants Michael and Jane McHarg said: ”The application was refused by the planning officer for four reasons all of which appear to have stemmed from an incorrect assumption that the golf course serviced by the club house still existed; an assumption, which partly arose as a result of a site inspection not being considered as part of the assessment process.”

It added: “In short a new use needs to be found for a building that is redundant from its original purpose and which has no prospects of being used for that originally intended purpose again in the future.”
