Couple who 'lost everything' in canal flood fear it will happen again after finding suspected leak

A couple who "lost everything" in a flood after the Leeds and Liverpool canal burst its banks fear it will happen again.

Two years ago, firefighters were called to Waddicar Lane in Melling after a culvert or sinkhole collapsed under the canal which flooded some residents' homes.

Denise Mullen, the owner of a small farm who lives at Town Meadow Cottage, off Brewery Lane said at the time six inches of water flooded into her house.

The 60-year-old said she and her husband had "lost everything" and their house to this day was not fully restored after the devastating flood.

Images of the Melling couple's house show flooring missing after water swept into their house which left mud from the canal all over their floors.

Speaking to the ECHO, Mrs Mullen said: "Our house is still not sorted from last time and we lost everything.

"We lost a substantial amount of money, the parquet flooring flowed and washed away.

"Our horses were standing in the the stables in water.

"It's still not right now."

However, as the couple went on a walk today, they said they noticed a suspected leak near to where the culvert had formed previously - despite the area being dry.

Mrs Mullen added: "We were walking our dog today and we found the canal leaking again.

"We are in the direct path of any breach as we are downhill from the canal, our property stands alone in fields.

"It has been very, very dry and this area was completely dried out.

"It has been for weeks, now there is lying water in the field below the canal.

"It's very worrying."

Mrs Mullen said she contacted the Canal and River Trust, which deals with such concerns, however had not received a response at the time she contacted the ECHO.

However, after the ECHO got in touch with the trust, the charity said it was sending out a team to investigate the suspected leak.

A spokesperson for the Canal and River Trust said: “Our team is currently on site investigating a suspected leak on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Melling following concerns from a member of the public."

The previous flood two years ago saw 600 sandbags and 20 tonnes of grit being used to fill in the collapsed culvert, as well as 25 tonnes of clay being deployed and a significant quantity of stone to seal the sinkhole.
