Couple who holidayed in Manchester 'spark urgent track and trace operation in Berlin after testing positive for Covid-19'

A couple from Berlin who holidayed in Manchester have sparked an urgent track and trace operation in the German capital after testing positive for Covid-19.

Thirteen people who have had contact with the pair have also tested positive for coronavirus.

A total of 50 people who have been in contact with them are now in quarantine, the Bild newspaper reports.

The Turkish couple are a taxi driver, 50, and his wife, 45, who have four children aged nine to 21.

All of the children and their grandmother are now infected, the German paper reports.

It is understood that they have not required hospital treatment.

Bild reports that the couple arrived home on a Ryanair flight on July 16 - but were not diagnosed with coronavirus until six days later, Gudrun Widders, a Berlin health official told BILD newspaper.

It is not yet known if Ryanair has contacted other passengers who were on the July 16 flight.

The M.E.N has contacted the airline for comment.

Germany has so far recorded a total of 207,379 coronavirus cases and 9,205 deaths.

All travellers arriving at Berlin airports will be offered a free coronavirus test from July 30.
