Couple who bought house for £1 could lose home - despite spending £65k on improvements

Homeowners who purchased properties for just £1 have been reunited with cameras crews - a year from buying the budget homes.

The residents took part in a Channel 4 series - called The £1 Houses: Britain's Cheapest Street - filmed last year.

But one couple were left gutted after an unexpected discovery - which, worryingly, means they could lose their dream home.

Ste and Sarah were featured on the show, and viewers saw the duo hit a major problem that could mean the end for their property dreams.

The couple, who were renovating their home in the Webster Triangle, Liverpool, to move into with their two young children, were two months away from the council deadline when they hit an unexpected problem.

Ste, who works in the music business, spent £65,000 renovating the house and undertaking a huge amount of labour himself.

But with just weeks to go and the clock ticking on the council deadline , Ste discovered that one key element needed for the final inspection might not come through in time.

All houses need to have their gas reconnected in time for the council inspection - but Ste is told by the gas company he faces a three-month wait.

Explaining his situation on the show, the dad-of-two said: "Three months just to get it back on. I just wish I'd thought of it earlier.

"That would just push me over my deadline. That's when the locksmiths come in - I could lose the house and all the money that I've put into this place."

A tearful Sarah broke down in filming as she described the possibility of losing the family's dream home, reports the Liverpool Echo.

She said: "If the gas doesn't come before the deadline I honestly don't know if we'd even be allowed to keep the house. The new house is the one, you know, that's where we're taking our babies to. I'm going to cry.

"I don't really want to think about what will happen if we don't get in."

The couple, who had rented for 13 years, grabbed their "once in a lifetime" opportunity to own their own home through the council scheme.

In the latest show, viewers will find out if they can get over the final hurdle in time for the council deadline and make their dreams come true.

Another £1 house owner who facing a different type of deadline in tonight's episode is 29-year-old Ibby.

Due to give birth in just three weeks , she is desperate for her house to be finished and ready to move into before her baby arrives.
