A couple were caned 140 times for having sex outside of marriage and drinking alcohol by sharia police in Indonesia.
Sexual relations between unmarried couples is strictly forbidden in Aceh, the only province in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country to enforce a form of sharia law.
An unmarried man and woman were publicly caned with a rattan stick in a park, as dozens of onlookers watched, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
The woman lost consciousness during the punishment and was taken away by ambulance.
The pair received 140 lashings in total - 100 for sexual relations and 40 for consuming alcohol - the head of Banda Aceh’s Sharia police, Muhammad Rizal, said.
They were among six people flogged for breaking the Islamic code.
A sharia law police officer and his female partner, who were caught in close proximity in a private place, were also flogged.
They received 23 lashings each.
Rizal said sharia police make “no exceptions” when it comes to enforcing sharia law.
