Couple told to pay £1,600 to remove pile of rubbish - that's not even theirs

A couple have been told to cough up £1,600 to remove a mountain of fly-tipped rubbish from their pub car park - that is not even theirs.

Mark and Rebecca Poole bought The Ash Inn, in Mow Cop, Staffordshire, in February and had been due to reopen in May following a refurbishment.

That has now been delayed until Saturday, July 4 due to the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

But they have been haunted by the rubbish which was in a skip when they bought the pub and has since been dumped, reports StokeonTrentLive.

They say an agreement was in place to remove the skip within two weeks of the sale going through - but that didn't happen.

They say they have been quoted £500 and then £1,600 to remove the skip.

Now the skip has been removed - and its contents, including glass and canisters, dumped on the car park of the Mow Cop Road pub.

Rebecca, aged 41, from Mow Cop, said: "I contacted the council but they can't do anything. It is disgusting that someone could do this.

“We are going to arrange for someone else to come and clean it because we want it clean for the residents and ready for the pub to open.

"It’s been one thing after another. We are trying to get the pub up and running and then dealing with an issue like this.

"It has put a strain on me and really stressed me out, I haven't been sleeping very well."

The Ash Inn will be run by Kelly Evans and Brent Willcocks.

The inside has been revamped with a new bar, kitchen, carpets and upholstery. The beer garden has benches.

Kelly said: "There will be measures in place to keep all of the staff and customers safe.

"All Government guidelines will be followed."
