The former manager of a remote post office and a livestock agent have been committed to stand trial on charges of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Australia Post.

Greg and Rebecca Liebelt are accused of stealing $425,749.95 from the Australia Post Office in Tennant Creek between March 2019 and May 2021.

They have each been charged with aggravated stealing and obtaining a benefit by deception.

Rebecca Liebelt, who managed the Tennant Creek Post Office, has also been charged with money laundering.

The married couple appeared in Alice Springs Local Court by video link from Tennant Creek, where they remain on bail.

"The money was stolen from Australia Post, from their banking system," prosecutor Glen Dooley told the court.

Mr Dooley said there was an "open question" about how much Greg Liebelt knew about the alleged theft, but indicated there were telephone intercepts which showed he had some knowledge of the alleged crimes.

Mr Liebelt is a well-known livestock agent based in Tennant Creek.

Judge Greg Borchers found there was enough evidence to commit the pair to stand trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court.

An administrative hearing has been scheduled in Alice Springs on October 27.

In a statement to ABC Rural, Australia Post said the company had dismissed Mrs Liebelt, who was a franchisee.
