Two young people trying to take a selfie on a railway track were hit by a passenger train and severely injured at Samsen station in Bangkok’s Phaya Thai district early on Thursday.

The pair, a man and woman who work together, had been drinking nearby before they went down onto one track to take selfies with an approaching train on the other track around 4.30am.

Unfortunately, they failed to notice there was another train approaching the station on the track they were on, Thai media reported.

The short-haul Bangkok-Rangsit service ran over them.

The woman, identified only as Walailuck, 28, lost her right leg. She was left lying beneath the train, and her severed right leg was beside the track. Rescue workers rushed her to Ramathibodi Hospital.

The man, identified only as Amnart, 24, was knocked off the track and sustained severe head injuries. He was rushed to Vachira Hospital, said Pol Capt Witsanu Saksueb-in, deputy investigation chief at Noppawong police station.

Police would question the train driver, the two injured people and people who witnessed the accident and examine surveillance camera footage of the area, he said.
