Couple tackle 'scumbag thief' and hold her until police arrive

A couple tackled a woman in a ‘citizen’s arrest’ after she was caught stealing items from a neighbours car.

Officers from Merseyside Police are appealing for information following a reported robbery on Utting Avenue, Anfield.

At around 7:40am on Monday, April 19 it was reported a woman had been detained by a member of the public.

At the time of the incident she is said to have been wearing grey suede boots, a leather jacket and a grey hoodie.

It is understood the woman ransacked a number of vehicles as she made her way through Utting Avenue.

In a public Facebook post the couple said they "caught the scumbag going through cars".

The post read: “At half 7:30 this morning, this scumbag woman was caught going through cars.

“We made a citizen’s arrest and the police have arrested her. She had a good few bags full of items, possibly things she’s stolen from other people’s properties or cars.

“She came from the direction of Liverpool’s stadium down Utting Avenue.”

Merseyside Police confirmed the incident and the ‘citizen’s arrest’ from a member of the public.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to Utting Avenue, Anfield at around 7.40am yesterday, Monday, 19 April, following reports a member of the public had detained a woman after she had taken a handbag from a vehicle.

“Officers attended and found the item had been returned to the owner.

"A subsequent search of the woman proved negative and the woman will attend a police station to be questioned in relation to the incident.

“An investigation is underway and anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref. 21000247526 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
