Couple spends £50k transforming house into 1950s paradise with James Bond art

A couple who are obsessed with the 1950s have renovated their home into an homage to the decade in a three-year project.

Gemma and Dean Burton, 42, have forked out £50k to transform their three-bedroom property, collecting art work and furniture that pays tribute to the 1950s.

The couple, from Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire, have adorned their walls from floor to ceiling with pin up wallpaper and prints from the era, including James Bond posters.

They also have jewellery from the 50s proudly displayed in cases around the house.

Gemma said: “We’ve lived in the house for 15 years, and always found the whites and creams of the walls pretty uninspiring.

“I found that I couldn’t live completely plain or be able to live so minimalist, as before the renovation, our house seemed pretty dull looking back."

She added she and her hubby have revamped the entire house - even putting a bar in their garage.

And while the windows and the bathroom were installed by professionals, Gemma and Dean did all the other work on the house themselves.

Looking for bargains on eBay and Etsy as well as car boot sales and charity shops, they picked up artwork that would fit the theme of the decade.

Gemma said: "We’ve probably spent about £5-£6k on decorations, paint and prints.

"We tried to make the house as colourful as possible and have used greys, oranges, greens and blacks throughout to create contrast alongside the printed wallpaper."

“All of the decoration we did ourselves, so we probably actually saved about £7000 by not hiring someone to come paint and paper the house.

“We also converted our garage into a bar which cost about £2000, as we made the mini bar from scratch but added lighting and a pool table as well as a karaoke machine."

She said: "We both just really like anything a bit different and adore mid-century themes, so we’ve tried to match those passions with our home which was actually built in 1969."

Among the statement pieces of furniture in the house is a tan sofa which gives the living room "a vintage look" alongside a coffee table and sideboards.

Gemma said: "I got black clear cabinets to display my fifties hair clips, bags and accessories in the spare room, and they work amazingly in front of the back drop of the women’s magazines wallpaper.

"Dean and I really love attending 50s events, and like to dress up in styles that replicate the era.

"So we needed somewhere to display my petticoats, circle skirts and hair pins as well as Dean’s Hawaiian shirts and the like, so we converted one of the rooms into a dressing room with clothes rails."

Gemma shares the transformation of her house on her Instagram account, @thebresidence.

She said: "We’ve had a pretty positive reaction from our followers on Instagram, but a lot have joked that they’d hate to be the ones dusting the house just because of our maximalist nature of collecting and displaying items."
