Couple share old-school parenting tip for dealing with fussy eaters - but it's hard for some to swallow

A couple have shared their old fashioned parenting technique on how to deal with fussy eaters - but the method has divided opinion.

Mum Darin  explained on social media how dinner in their house is dished up to their children and it proved tough to swallow for some.

Posting on TikTok the couple explained: "This is dinner... late-night snack. This is whatever happens... whenever we get an 'I'm hungry'.

"They've gotta eat their food that they didn't finish at the table. They have the option, they don't have to finish it, but they're not having anything else for the rest of the night."

The pair, who hail from from Florida in the United States, went on to say that while their children will sit with noting if they don't finish their own meal, they will gorge on delicious desserts after dinner - right in front of their kids.

Unapologetic, they continued: "We make dessert, we eat cupcakes, we make cookies... we're gonna eat it right in front of them.

"The plate will sit here on the counter until they go to sleep, that's how it works in our house."

While positive comments came flooding in, so did the hate

One person asked: "This is what I don't like about my sister's parenting too. So disrespectful. I don't make my kids do things I wouldn't do either. We eat intuitively."

A second user said: "One day the kids will just hide the food. I would have pockets full of chicken in order to get that cookie."

But one said they loved their parenting style, and that no explanation was needed, as another wrote: "I wish more families did this."

And: "That's exactly how I was raised, and how I raised my children" admitted one user.

Responding to one critic who branded her  "disrespectful" for scoffing treats and goodies in front of the kids, the mum hit back with another video saying her kids were "fine with it".

She said: "I am the mother of my children and I don't agree with this," she said.

She explained that every night is different, there are some nights where her kids don't eat.

There are also some nights where the family eat dessert - not every night - and they know that if they don't eat their dinner, they won't get dessert.

"They're fine with that," she said.
