Couple’s miracle escape after horror firebomb attack in Cumbernauld

Police are hunting an arsonist after a firebomb attack in Cumbernauld.

A man and woman in the top floor flat, in Medlar Road, escaped after the terrifying incident last night.

Emergency services raced to the scene at 8.25pm after reports that a bottle containing a flammable liquid had been thrown at the door of a top floor flat.

The occupants, a 36-year-old man, and a woman, aged 33 years, were not injured.

Detective Constable Craig Jeffrey, Coatbridge, CID, said: “Thankfully the fire didn't take hold and no one was injured but if it had, this is the only way out of the flat and so could have been very dangerous for the family who live there and indeed those who live in the close.

“At the moment we don't know the motive behind this attack but would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area between 8pm and 9pm, and who saw someone run from the flats, or who was maybe hanging about the area, to get in touch.

“From enquires so far, a man, described as being dressed in dark clothing was seen loitering about the close and then was seen to run off off shortly afterwards.

Information can be passed via telephone number 101 to Coatbridge CID. Please quote reference number 3990 of Saturday, 6 February, 2021, when calling.

Alternatively, details can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
