Couple's dazzling Christmas light display so bright RAF pilots use it to navigate

A couple's dazzling Christmas light display is so bright RAF pilots have used it to navigate.

The collection of illuminated Santas, reindeers, angels, snowmen and Christmas trees, containing 150,000 lights, is a beacon for tourists and children, as well as a marker for fighter jets.

And for the past 20 years, Jeremy and Mandy Voakes have helped raise £20,000 for the NSPCC.

Jeremy, 51, a vet, admits he is probably “obsessed” by his light display.

His wife Mandy said: “I just accept it, to be honest. He loves doing it.

"Just when I think we’re finished, he’ll go into the garage and fetch another box of lights and I’ll think, ‘Oh, no, there’s more to go!’”

Their house in Cark-in-Cartmel, Cumbria, is this year also decorated in a rainbow of 2,000 lights to celebrate the dedication and sacrifice of NHS and care workers during the pandemic.

Jeremy starts work on the display in October and his wife, daughter Jess, 18, and son David, also help out.

He said: “It’s a team effort now. Our children have grown up with it, and now help us put up the display.

“We started just putting a few up like most people do, mainly for the children, but after a couple of years when we moved to this house we put a new roof on and hung lights from the scaffolding as a bit of a joke, and it went from there.”

Sandra Jones, NSPCC community fundraising manager, said: “The display is absolutely incredible this year, as always, and we’re enormously grateful for the amazing amount the illuminations have raised for the NSPCC over the years.”
