Couple's controversial solution to feeding their fussy kids sparks fierce debate

Fussy eating can be one of the most challenging issues a parent has to tackle.

And although it's normal for a child to go through a phase of liking and disliking certain foods, not addressing the issue can make matters worse as they grow up.

So in the hopes of helping other parents online, a couple revealed exactly how they get their children to eat their dinner - but it didn't go down well with everyone.

Darin from Florida in the United States shared her old-fashioned parenting style on social media, where she explained how dinner in their house goes down.

She called it "Parenting 101" (TikTok/@darin_nicole)

The couple explained: "This is dinner... late-night snack. This is whatever happens... whenever we get an 'I'm hungry'.

"They've gotta eat their food that they didn't finish at the table. They have the option, they don't have to finish it, but they're not having anything else for the rest of the night."

They went on to say that they eat all sorts of enticing desserts after dinner, in front of their kids.

They continued: "We make dessert, we eat cupcakes, we make cookies... we're gonna eat it right in front of them.

"The plate will sit here on the counter until they go to sleep, that's how it works in our house."

While positive comments came flooding in, so did the hate.

One person asked: "This is what I don't like about my sister's parenting too. So disrespectful. I don't make my kids do things I wouldn't do either. We eat intuitively."

A second user said: "One day the kids will just hide the food. I would have pockets full of chicken in order to get that cookie."

But one said they loved their parenting style, and that no explanation was needed, as another wrote: "I wish more families did this."

And: "That's exactly how I was raised, and how I raised my children" admitted one user.

She later responded to a person who suggested it was "disrespectful" to eat dessert in front of the kids in a follow-up video.

"I am the mother of my children and I don't agree with this," she said.

She explained that every night is different, there are some nights where her kids don't eat.

There are also some nights where the family eat dessert - not every night - and they know that if they don't eat their dinner, they won't get dessert.

"They're fine with that," she said.
