Couple's anger at 'hit and run' in Tesco car park

A Bristol couple say they are facing a hefty bill after a driver hit their car in a Tesco car park, but drove off.

Sophie Peacock, from Patchway, was shopping in Tesco in the Willow Brook Centre in Bradley Stoke when she says the 'hit and run' happened.

When she got back to her partner Ross Millett's beloved Toyota GT86 at about 7.20pm on Friday (May 24, 2019), the front of the vehicle had substantial damage.

Ross told Bristol Live witnesses at the scene claimed a black Renault Clio had reversed into the car, but had then driven off.

Ross, a local business-owner, said: "It was parked at Tesco and Sophie came out and saw it damaged.

"Luckily two people saw it and took down the registration number. They waited for Sophie to come out.

"She then went to see security who confirmed the car was on their tapes, so we just need police to get the footage off them."

Ross' car is his pride and joy, and he said: "The damage is at least £1500 worth, it needs a new light and a new bumper - the lights alone are £500."

According to the AA, 20 per cent of insurance claims they receive come from accidents in car parks - but one in five people admit they would drive off from the scene if the damage was minor.

Ross said: "The staff at Tesco were really helpful, they said you wouldn't believe how many people hit cars and just drive off.

"Just because people are in a car park, it seems like the rules don't apply."

The couple have reported the incident to Avon and Somerset Constabulary. Bristol Live has approached the force for any update.

What you should do if you have an accident in a car park

1. Stop the car - failing to do so is an offence

2. Switch off the engine and turn on the hazard lights

3. Check for any injuries to yourself or passengers. Call an ambulance if necessary

4. Call the police - 999 or 101 depending on the situation

5. Give your details to anyone else involved

6. Collect details from any other drivers, passengers or witnesses

7. Take photos if necessary

8. Contact your insurer
