Couple recalls costly move from South Side to suburbs on Spike show

April 28--Julian and Erika Singleton said they feel safer after moving from the Auburn Gresham neighborhood to south suburban Richton Park in 2014, but they watched their expenses soar.

"When we moved here, within two weeks, I just saw money just disappearing really, really quick," Julian Singleton said in a preview of Sunday's episode of "Life or Debt," scheduled to air 9 p.m. on the Spike network.

The Singletons, who have two kids, said they lived for free in their family's building on the South Side but moved because of gun violence on their block. Julian Singleton, a suburban postal worker, said he maxed out four credit cards paying for the increase in living expenses.

Personal finance consultant Victor Antonio, who grew up in the Humboldt Park area, visited with the couple to try to get their finances in order. The Singletons are one of 10 families featured in the series.

"If we don't get the help now, we might not be able to keep the house in Richton Park," Erika Singleton, a social worker, said in the episode preview.

"That's what really scares me, going back (to the South Side). My children's lives are at stake. My wife's life is at stake. Going back will just break my heart," Julian Singleton said.
