Couple raffles off their four bed home for 'the price of a cup of coffee' to help NHS

A homeowner has decided to raffle off his four-bedroom home for less than the price of a cup of coffee to raise money for the NHS.

Nick Wyrill, 34, who works as an NHS manager at Pinderfields Hospital in West Yorkshire, and his wife Louise, are offering people the chance to win their home on the outskirts of Wakefield for just £2 a ticket.

As a way of saying thank you to the NHS for their "hard work and resilience" during the pandemic, Nick and Louise will be donating 10 per cent of all ticket sales to the NHS MY Hospitals Charity.

The couple, who want to move to a bigger house that's closer to where they both work, initially looked into selling their home through conventional channels until they came across the idea of a raffle.

Nick told the ECHO: "I saw another couple had raffled their house in about July time last year who were relocating to Australia.

"I started researching that a bit more and I found out that you can donate some of the sales to charity through the raffle website.

"It cemented the fact that we wanted to do something to support the NHS."

At the start of the pandemic Nick sadly lost his mum to cancer and last week he was told his dad has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

Nick said these personal circumstances as well as his experiences at the hospital have inspired him to give back to the NHS.

Speaking of the situation at Pinderfields Hospital, Nick said: "It's difficult, the numbers are ever increasing. The resilience the staff have shown currently and during the last 12 months has been amazing.

"I want to give something back to the Hospital as a big thank you to everyone and do something to support the NHS.

"The charity is for both staff and patients, so the funds would be spent on things that support staff and their health and well-being and on the patient experience."

The four bedroom detached house is located in a cul-de-sac and comes with an orangery looking out onto a spacious garden.

In order to recoup the value of the home the couple are looking to sell 250,000 tickets before July 1, enabling them to donate £50,000 to the My Hospitals Charity which supports the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

If some tickets are still left by that date, the winner of the raffle will be awarded 75 per cent of the ticket sales.

Nick said: "It's an unconventional way to do is but it's exciting really checking how many tickets we've sold.

"It also means that we don't have to show someone around every time we have a viewing. We've got an 18 month old son so trying to do that would be hard work.

"For a couple of quid and less than the price of a cup of coffee you could win a house and if you don't you've still supported an NHS charity."
