Couple orders wedding cake resembling life-size deer

A Pennsylvania baker has gained notoriety for creating a wedding cake resembling a life-size deer.

The masterpiece was crafted by Pam McNeal of Shady Maple Farm Market in East Earl in Lancaster County.

John Gehr, marketing and sales manager for Shady Maple, told For The Win Outdoors that the cake was ordered for a wedding that was held last Saturday.

The bride and groom had brought in a set of plastic antlers and asked if the bakery could “make a wedding cake to fit the antlers,” Gehr said.

McNeal, cake decorating supervisor at Shady Maple, required 10 hours to construct the cake, which was large enough to serve 250 guests.

The head and neck were styrofoam, but the rest of the deer was cake.

Gehr did not know whether the bride and groom were hunters, wildlife enthusiasts, or simply wanted an unusual cake to serve as a conversation piece.

But it’s almost certain that somebody, at some point during the proceedings, muttered the phrase “deerly beloved.”

Gehr said several media requests have been fielded since Shady Maple posted a photo of the deer on its Facebook page on the wedding day.
