Couple on motorbike seriously injured after BMW hit and run

A man and woman on a motorbike suffered serious injuries after they were struck by a BMW car which failed to stop at the scene.

The couple, from St Helens, were on a popular route with bikers in the Ribble Valley area when they were knocked off their bike.

Lancashire Police were called at around 2.05pm on Sunday (July 12) to reports of an incident in Lythe Fell Road, Slaidburn.

A 53-year-old man from St Helens had been riding a Kawasaki motorbike towards High Bentham when he fell from the vehicle suffering broken ribs.

A 42-year-old woman, also from St Helens, was a pillion passenger on the bike and fell suffering a serious back injury.

Both were taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

Police believe a dark-coloured BMW car, travelling towards Slaidburn, could have been involved in the incident. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the scene.

Sgt Martin Wilcock, of Lancashire Police's Tactical Operations Unit, said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened.

"We know this is a popular route with bikers and believe a large group of riders had just passed when the incident took place.

"I would urge the driver of the BMW to come forward and speak to us. If you can help please get in touch."

Police appealed for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information can call 101 or email 365@lancashire.pnn.police.uk quoting log 0849 of July 12.
