Couple move wedding reception to Motherwell McDonald's after venue cancelled twice due to Covid-19

A Bellshill couple are to host their wedding reception at a McDonald's restaurant in Motherwell after their original venue was cancelled twice as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shannon McKenna and Melissa Russell faced a race against time to arrange a venue for their big day celebration due to the failing health of 27-year-old Melissa’s dad following the double cancellation.

And that saw them approach McDonald's franchise owner Kate Walker to seek permission to host the reception at the restaurant - where Melissa has worked for the past six years - after they tie the knot at Chatelherault Country Park on Saturday.

Melissa, who lives in Bellshill, told the Daily Record: "We’re so grateful to Kate for hosting us and our small party on such a special day.

“It’s not the day we’d imagined, but we’re over the moon to be spending the reception at the Motherwell restaurant. It will certainly be one to remember.

“I’ve worked at McDonald’s for six years now and have made many happy memories there, as well as friends for life, so I’m excited to spend the evening there with my loved ones.

“I can’t wait to become Mrs McKenna.”

McDonald's franchise owner Kate Walker said they were "delighted" to have been asked to host the reception after hearing about the difficulties Melissa and Shannon had in trying to secure a venue.

"It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to host Mel and Shannon’s wedding reception on Saturday.

“We were delighted when they asked us to use the restaurant, especially after hearing the trouble they’d had trying to secure a venue and a date.

"Mel has been a valued part of my team for six years now and it’s great to be able to give something back as a thank you for all her hard work.

"Here at McDonald’s we pride ourselves on COVID safety and we’ll be taking every precaution to ensure the wedding can go ahead within the current government restrictions.

“We’re really looking forward to being a part of their special day.”

We wish Melissa and Shannon all the best for their big day!
