Couple make a big entrance to their school prom - arriving in a helicopter

Many teenagers manage to hire a limo or a vintage bus for their school prom big entrance, but this couple went one better - arriving in a helicopter. Ethan Sherry has been flying since the age of 13 and became one of the youngest people in the UK to obtain his pilot licence just four years later.

So when his girlfriend Shannon Convie, 18, invited him to St Catherine's College's school formal, he enlisted a friend to fly them their via helicopter. Ethan's pal flew him to pick up Shannon from her home in Maghery, in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

He secured permission to land in a nearby rugby club car park on June 28. Then the pair took off and flew to the venue in Monaghan, County Monaghan, Ireland.

Ethan, who had hopes of becoming a commercial pilot until he discovered he was colour blind, said: "One of my friends in the flying community offered to fly us to the formal in his helicopter for free - and I just thought it was a no brainer.

"Everyone was very impressed and it was quite a surprise. Usually people turn up in all sorts, from cars to limos to tractors - but I believe turning up in a helicopter is certainly a first for the school - maybe even Ireland! We had an absolutely brilliant time but think we'll stay off the radar now and not planning anything as fancy - at least for the next two weeks."

He is currently fundraising for the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance.
