Couple left to sleep on in-laws' living room floor after horror hotel experience

Guests of a horror hotel were "evacuated" to spend a night on their in-laws floor rather than endure the B&B.

Andrew Tomlinson and his wife, of Sutton Coldfield, booked into the Minster Garth, in Keldgate, for three nights while visiting East Yorkshire for a family birthday.

The couple ended up ditching the Beverley guest house after a series of issues came to light, Hull Daily Mail reported.

When they first arrived at Minster Garth they were left standing outside for more than 40 minutes after calling the number displayed on the door, Andrew said.

“When we did get an answer, which was by messenger on the phone, he was rude and blamed everyone but himself,” the disgruntled guest recalled.

“We gained entry into the little hallway, with him saying he had no booking in our name or in that of my mother-in-law who had booked the room for us.

“When we finally got into the room we wished we hadn’t because, in all my years travelling around this country and abroad, I’ve never seen such a disgusting, dirty room in all my life.

“There were stains on the bed cover and pillows and when I took off the cover, it was even worse with stains.

“The floor by the door was disgusting with dirt and stains and there was no light in the bathroom, which was just as bad with dirt and stains everywhere.”

The couple left and made for Andrew's in-laws' house, where they slept on a blow up mattress.

"I wouldn’t have let a homeless person stay in that place," Andrew said.

"With the Covid situation, I’m surprised that this place is allowed to be open - dirt and filth everywhere.

“Beverley is a beautiful place and for them to allow a place like this to operate right next to the Minster is unbelievable."

Andrew said he was offered a 50% discount after complaining, which he refused.

“When I threatened to expose the matter through the media, he said he was not afraid of the gutter press," he continued.

“After arranging for the offending room to be carefully photographed for evidence, we 'evacuated' the family to a safe alternative.”

A number of equally scathing reviews have been posted recently on TripAdvisor, where Minster Garth has a 1.5 out of 5 rating.

In a statement the B&B owners said: “We recently took on contract cleaners Shimmer & Shine and, in consultation with ERYC health and safety, we have three Covid-19 hygiene areas around the guest house, offering free masks, hand cleanser etc, and with Humberside fire officers, we have recently installed new external lighting.

“We have also invested in 20 complete sets of new bedding, including new pillows, mattress protectors, towels etc.

“We believe some people see historical negative reviews and, having booked under the discounted non-cancellation policies (fully flexible booking available at a small additional charge), arrive with a negative attitude, looking for problems and take no account of the fact we are a budget low-cost guest house less than half the price of other accommodation in Beverley.”
