Couple left on street in undies after burst pipe sees Glasgow hotel evacuated

A couple have told how they spent the coldest night of the year in their undies on the street – after a burst pipe saw them evacuated from their hotel.

Sean Dowling says he was left shivering in just his pants and a T-shirt after a flood at the Argyll Hotel in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of yesterday.

The 52-year-old and partner Pamela O’Sullivan, 47, were woken and told the building was flooding.

Sean said: “I didn’t have a clue what was happening. We were told to get out and we didn’t have time to put any clothes on. They were all soaking wet anyway.

“My legs were blue with the cold. It was absolutely freezing.”

Sales rep Pamela added: “I threw on a coat with nothing underneath and Sean just had on his underpants and a T-shirt.

“We had to leave the rest of our clothes and belongings because the room was swimming with water.

“The carpets were squelching and my brand new £150 Ugg boots are ruined.

The Glasgow people have been brilliant but we can’t wait to get home to Birmingham.”

It was more agony for the couple, who had bought tickets to see Rod Stewart at the Hydro but fell victim to a scam and didn’t get to the gig.

Pamela said: “Our luck has been rotten”

Argyll Hotel boss Bobby Bashir said the weather had caused a pipe to burst and they’d offered guests support and a refund on their stay.

He added: “A couple of the rooms are quite badly damaged and the whole ceiling is down in one of them”
