Couple injured after being attacked by man with bat in pub car park

A man must pay £350 compensation to a couple after swinging a silver bat in a Clifton pub car park.

Fencing worker Luke Pritchett left a woman with two fractured fingers while her husband had two small cuts on his head, a court heard.

An 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, was imposed on Pritchett, 26, of Woodside Road, Beeston. He agreed to pay the compensation at £25 weekly.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing bodily harm outside the Crusader pub on June 16, 2017.

The couple were in a group who had visited the pub for a Father's Day event two nights early, said Steven Taylor, prosecuting, at Nottingham Crown Court.

Pritchett was suspected of getting involved in trouble with a man, whose girlfriend challenged him.

Pritchett got out of a car carrying a silver bat and the girl's parents intervened to protect her.

The mother was struck on one hand and her husband tried to help. Mr Taylor told the court: "He was trying to get the bat from the defendant."

He said Pritchett had stayed out of trouble for the two years since the incident.

Chris Brewin represented Pritchett and said: "He accepts it is right the victims should be paid compensation. He would like time to pay by instalments."

Judge Stuart Rafferty QC said he took note of Pritchett's ability to stay out of trouble and said he showed "indications of growing maturity".

The judge added: "There used to be a saying that justice delayed is justice denied. That applies equally to defendants and to victims of crime."
