Couple in court after family fight during wedding reception at the Britannia Hotel

Wedding trouble erupted at a Britannia Hotel reception - and there was a second bout before dawn.

That family confrontation ended with a couple in court and another pair needing hospital treatment.

City magistrates heard that tensions grew from an old family dispute which came to the fore after the wedding reception held at the Britannia Hotel on July 15 last year.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said that threats were made. A couple ordered a taxi and went to Kevin and Nicola Underwood's home at the time on Japonica Drive.

The visitors - Kevin's sister Anna and her partner Scott Catton - suffered injuries and were taken to hospital after police arrived.

Mr Catton had "significant swelling around the left eye, a swollen face and bruised lip," said Mr Carr. He was given a CT scan. His partner suffered blurred vision.

Kevin Underwood, 42, was ordered to do 100 hours unpaid community work. He had denied assaulting the couple by beating but was found guilty of both charges.

He must pay £50 compensation to each of them and share £620 prosecution costs with his wife Nicola, 44. She was convicted of assaulting Anna Underwood by beating.

Nicola was ordered to obey a curfew for two months at home in Ena Avenue, Sneinton. She must pay £50 compensation to Anna.

The magistrates banned them from contacting the other couple for a year. They must also stay away from their home.

Jo Tait, defending, said: "Neither Mr nor Mrs Underwood want to speak to Anna or the other complainant ever again. They have no objection to the restraining order."

She told the court that there had been violence at the wedding reception.

"Police were called to that fight and there were a number of people involved, including the two complainants.

"Police broke it up and everybody was told to go home, out of the city centre, get away from each other.

"Mr and Mrs Underwood went home," said Miss Tait.

But she said Anna phoned and went to the Underwood's home at 2.30am with her partner.

"They made an effort to get a taxi in the early hours of the morning. They had been drinking and went to the Underwood's address," added Miss Tait.

Presiding magistrate Virginia D'Vaz said the case was serious because of the injuries and evidence of kicking. But she added: "There was a lack of premeditation."
