Couple held for forced religious conversion in Uttar Pradesh

SANT KABIR NAGAR(UP): A husband and wife, identified as Jose and Elma from Kerala, have been arrested in Aurahi village in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar for allegedly compelling a woman to undergo religious conversion, police said on Tuesday.

The Superintendent of Police (Sant Kabir Nagar), Satyjeet Gupta, mentioned that the arrest followed a complaint filed by Nirmala Nishad on the same day. Nishad alleged that the couple conducted a Sunday prayer in her village, promoting Christianity.

Nishad, who has been searching for her missing child for three years, attended the prayer where speakers reportedly suggested that if she renounced Hinduism, her child would return.

Furthermore, she claimed that the talks included derogatory remarks about Hindu deities.

The couple now faces charges under section 298 (Uttering words, etc, with the intention to wound religious feelings) of the IPC and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. The police are currently investigating the matter.
