Couple 'gutted' when they arrive home and open their door

A boyfriend and girlfriend were "gutted" to arrive home from Wembley to find their house trashed and items including birthday presents stolen.

Over the weekend, the couple, from St Helens, travelled to Wembley Stadium to watch Saints victory against Castleford in the Challenge Cup, as part of the girlfriend's birthday celebrations.

But when the couple, who wished to remain anonymous, arrived home, they were "shocked" to find numerous items of clothing scattered across their drive, their patio door smashed and multiple belongings missing.

The man told the ECHO that money and presents for his girlfriend's birthday were also taken.

Merseyside Police have said CCTV and forensic enquiries have been carried out.

The man said: "We’d set off to London Saturday morning around about 7.30am. We got to London for 12pm and gone to Wembley to watch the rugby league final Saints vs Castleford for my girlfriends birthday weekend.

"Obviously they won and it was a great weekend. We stayed over in London and we drove home at about 8am or 8.30am on the Sunday morning.

"As we pulled up my girlfriend noticed there were numerous items of clothing in the driveway. When we went into the house the patio door window pane was smashed. We went upstairs and every drawer and every cupboard had been flipped over to find whatever they could.

"Nobody was hurt or injured or anything like that which is the main thing, but just knowing somebody has been in your house or somebody has been watching you to know when you’re out to plan what they’re going to do.

"My girlfriend was really bad when we got back home, it was just shock that we were going through."

The resident said an Xbox One with numerous games, all of his girlfriend's birthday presents including Versace perfume, various bottles of alcohol, a £50 River Island voucher, a challenge cordless drill and Black and Decker drill bit set were among the items stolen.

He said to replace the items, fix the damage and install CCTV, it will cost the couple almost £1500.

He said: "She had had a party the weekend before and she was given presents from her friends, her mum and her nan and grandad.

"All her birthday presents were gone.

"I just don't want people to have it happen to them. If you've got some sort of valuables, do get things in place to stop these people getting into your homes."

In a statement, Merseyside Police said: "We were contacted at 12.40pm on Sunday July 18 to reports of a burglary at house on the East Lancashire Road in St Helens.

"It is believed the burglary occurred between 7.30am on Saturday July 17 and 12pm on July 18 when unknown offenders entered the property and carried out a search of the rooms.

"A number of items were taken including cash, gift vouchers, tools and an X Box.

"CCTV and forensic enquiries have been carried out."
